Apple makes a free app called Move to iOS for Android phones. It copies your contacts, messages, photos, calendars and even WhatsApp chats.
Before you start
- On your Android phone, download Move to iOS (made by Apple) from the Google Play Store. On some newer Android phones you won't need it: your iPhone will tell you.
- Do this while setting up the new iPhone. If you have already finished setting it up, Apple's guide below explains your options.
- Plug both phones in to charge. If you have a USB-C cable that fits both phones, you can join them with it for a faster copy.
- Charge both phones, or keep them plugged in the whole time.
- Be on your home Wi-Fi. Have your Wi-Fi password ready (it is often on the back of your router).
- Know your passwords: the code that unlocks your old phone, and your Apple Account or Google Account password.
- Keep your old phone. Don't reset it or hand it in until you have checked everything is on the new one.
- Give yourself time. Allow about an hour. Moving lots of photos can take longer.
Step by step
- Turn on your new iPhone and place it next to your Android phone. On the Quick Start screen, tap Set Up Without Another Apple Device, then follow the steps until you see Transfer Your Apps & Data.
- Tap From Android. If asked, tap Transfer with App.
- On your Android phone, open Move to iOS, tap Continue and agree to the terms.
- On the iPhone, tap Continue when you see Move from Android. A short code (6 or 10 numbers) appears.
- Type that code into your Android phone.
- Your iPhone makes its own short-lived Wi-Fi connection. On the Android phone, tap Connect to join it, then wait.
- On the Android phone, tick what you want to move, such as contacts, messages, photos and WhatsApp. Tap Continue.
- Leave both phones alone until the bar on the iPhone is full, even if the Android phone says it has finished.
- Tap Done on the Android phone. On the iPhone, tap Continue and finish setting up.
When it has finished
- Check Photos, Contacts and Messages on the iPhone.
- Free apps that also exist for iPhone may be offered to download. Paid apps need buying again from the App Store, so check before you do.
