New Android phones have copying built in. On most phones it is called Android Switch. On a Samsung Galaxy it is called Smart Switch. HONOR, OPPO, OnePlus and Xiaomi also have their own apps: see their guides below.
Before you start
- Have your iPhone charging cable handy. Using a cable is easiest. If it doesn't fit your new phone, the shop can give you a small adapter.
- You need a Google Account (a Gmail address). You can make one while setting up.
- Charge both phones, or keep them plugged in the whole time.
- Be on your home Wi-Fi. Have your Wi-Fi password ready (it is often on the back of your router).
- Know your passwords: the code that unlocks your old phone, and your Apple Account or Google Account password.
- Keep your old phone. Don't reset it or hand it in until you have checked everything is on the new one.
- Give yourself time. Allow about an hour. Moving lots of photos can take longer.
Step by step
- Turn on your new Android phone and connect to Wi-Fi.
- When asked to copy apps and data, choose iPhone or iPad. (On a Samsung, choose to bring data from your old iPhone.)
- Sign in to your Google Account, or create one when asked.
- When asked, connect the two phones with the cable. Some newer phones show a square barcode (a QR code) instead: point your iPhone's camera at it.
- On the iPhone, tap Trust and type your iPhone passcode if asked.
- On the new phone, tick what you want to copy and tap Copy (or Transfer on a Samsung).
- Wait until it says it has finished, then unplug the cable.
- Important: on the iPhone, turn off iMessage so you don't miss text messages: Settings › Apps › Messages and switch iMessage off. On older iPhones it is Settings › Messages.
When it has finished
- If you have already given away your iPhone, you can still turn off iMessage on Apple's website (link below).
- Photos kept only in iCloud may copy across separately later. Check the Photos or Gallery app.
