Motorola phones use the copying that is built into Android. You do it while setting up the new phone. The exact words can differ between Motorola models.
Before you start
- Have your old phone's charging cable handy. If the new phone asks you to connect a cable, it is faster and more reliable.
- Charge both phones, or keep them plugged in the whole time.
- Be on your home Wi-Fi. Have your Wi-Fi password ready (it is often on the back of your router).
- Know your passwords: the code that unlocks your old phone, and your Apple Account or Google Account password.
- Keep your old phone. Don't reset it or hand it in until you have checked everything is on the new one.
- Give yourself time. Allow about an hour. Moving lots of photos can take longer.
From another Android phone
- Turn on your new Motorola, choose your language and tap Start.
- Put in your SIM card, or tap Skip. Connect to your Wi-Fi and tap Next.
- When asked, choose to copy from your old phone. If your old phone is lost or broken, choose your Google backup instead.
- Follow the steps on both phones, then choose which apps and data to copy.
- Skipped it during setup? Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Android Setup notification to finish.
From an iPhone
- During setup, choose Set up using an iOS device (it may say iPhone or iPad).
- Connect to Wi-Fi and sign in to your Google Account, or create one.
- Follow the steps on screen. If asked, connect the two phones with your iPhone's charging cable.
- Choose what to copy and wait until it finishes.
- Already set up the phone? On newer Motorola phones, go to Settings βΊ Back up or copy data and follow the steps.
When it has finished
- Check your contacts, photos and messages. Merge any contacts that appear twice.
- Coming from an iPhone? Turn off iMessage on the iPhone so you don't miss text messages: Settings βΊ Apps βΊ Messages (older iPhones: Settings βΊ Messages) and switch iMessage off. See our iPhone to Android guide.
- WhatsApp chats need their own step. See our WhatsApp guide.
- Motorola's help site has a guide for each model at help.motorola.com. The link below is for a recent moto g phone.
