iPhone to iPhone

Hold your new iPhone next to your old one and it copies almost everything across.

Apple calls this Quick Start. It is built into every new iPhone, so there is nothing to download.

Before you start

Step by step

  1. Turn on your new iPhone and put it right next to your old iPhone.
  2. On your old iPhone, a message about setting up your new iPhone appears. Tap Continue. If nothing appears, restart both phones and try again.
  3. A swirling pattern appears on the new iPhone. Hold your old iPhone above it so the pattern fits inside the circle on the old phone's screen.
  4. On the new iPhone, type the passcode you use on your old iPhone.
  5. Follow the steps to set up Face ID or Touch ID. You can choose to do this later.
  6. When you see Transfer Your Data, choose Transfer from iPhone to copy everything straight across. (Or choose Download from iCloud if you want to start using the new phone sooner.)
  7. Keep both phones close together and plugged in until it says it has finished. This can take from a few minutes to over an hour.
